Dr. Seuss Day

My sweet Kindergarten friends LOVE Dr. Seuss.  We did so many fun things, it is hard to remember them all.  Here is a quick snapshot of our day:

Thing 1 & Thing 2 Glyphs

-at Family Hats

Cat in the Hat
Everyone got to choose their favorite color to create their torn paper Cat in the Hat.  They were all so cute and unique.

Special Snack

St. Patricks Day

This year, St. Patty's Day was not on a school day; however, in true Kindergarten form, we celebrated anyway:)  The Friday before was a half day for my school and we had a lot to pack in before 12:00.

Leprechaun Number Sentences
We made these cute little guys to represent various combinations to 8.

Special Snack
We had Lucky Charms and Leprechaun Juice (aka- milk with green food coloring).  I had big plans to have cute packaging, but St. Patty's Day kinda snuck up on me.  There is always next year...  As we ate our snack, we did the typical marshmallow graphing activity and gathered whole class data.  They really had a blast gobbling this up  doing math.

Valentines Day

I must admit that this is one of my least favorite holidays, but my sweet Kindergartners love it so much  that it is hard not to get wrapped up in it.

Candy Number Sentences
We have been working very hard on number combinations and we were all the way up to 7 around Valentines Day.  We made these cute boxes of chocolate to represent a number sentence to 7.

"Bee" My Valentine
These are the valentines I made for my 16 sweet friends.  They turned out really cute, but they sure were involved.

Measurement

My school district adopted Investigations as our Math program this school year and we LOVE it!  One of our recent units was on measurement using non-standard units.  Our favorite activity was measuring the feet of many people we know and love from around the school.  I spent an afternoon tracing the feet of people such as our principal, the coaches, our art teacher, the Kindergarten teachers and even my sweet husband (who loves my K friends by the way).  The next day, we measured the feet and tracked our data.  We found that my husband had the biggest feet and one of our K teachers had the smallest.

Beginning of the Year Activities

These two activities are done at the beginning of the school year.  I know it is close to the end of the year, but they were too cute not to share:)

ABC Fashion Show
Every year, Kindergarten hosts an ABC Fashion Show.  Each Kindergartner takes home a letter vest (aka- a brown paper bag cut into a vest) with an assigned letter or number 1-20.  They decorate their vest with pictures/items to go along with their letter or number.  All of the Kindergartners gather together to walk the runway to show off their vests.  It is a blast:)

Buzzing Bee (special student of the day) Posters
Each day, one of my sweet friends becomes the Buzzing Bee for the day.  At the beginning of the year, we are very focused on building our classroom community.  One way that we do this is by having a Buzzing Bee interview where we ask getting to know you type questions and create a poster that will hang in our classroom for the remainder of the school year.  As part of the first Buzzing Bee experience, each sweet friend goes home with the portrait that each of their classmates drew of them that day.  It is a sweet keepsake and strengthens our sense of community.

100th Day

I really LOVE the 100th Day of school- it is always so much fun.  Here are some of the fun things we did to celebrate being 100 days smarter.

We made a huge gumball machine with 100 puffballs on it.  My students also filled out a gumball sheet with 10 machine hold 10 gumballs each found here.

My FAVORITE activity was making our 100 year old people.  While we were brainstorming what 100 year olds would look like, one of my students said "they have cracks in their face that might make their lips fall off!!  We made those "cracks" using torn paper.  They turned out so cute.

All of the kindergarten students worked together to make a 100th Day quilt.  Each student decorated at least one number however they wanted.

Winter

We have really done a lot of cute winter crafts that I just have to share.  Pintrest has changed my kindergarten crafting.

We read The Jacket I Wear in the Snow and labeled people dressed for winter weather.  Pictures to come...

After reading Snowmen at Night, we made this cute torn paper craft  with a writing extension asking students what they would do if they were a snowman at night.

I really ran with the "snowman theme" this year.  We did a writing activity saying what we would do if we lived in a snow globe.  We also made snowmen with their names on them.
